A homeowner in Southeast Ocala, Florida contacted Wildlife Works after a family of raccoons found their way into the attic through an opening near the home’s lanai addition.
The entry point was located where the original home’s soffit met the roofline of the lanai. Once the raccoons were successfully removed and our technicians confirmed that the attic was clear, Wildlife Works completed a custom exclusion repair to close the opening and help prevent wildlife from getting back inside.
Raccoons are strong, resourceful animals that can take advantage of surprisingly small vulnerabilities along a home’s roofline, soffits, vents, and other exterior areas.
At this home, a gap between the original soffit and the lanai addition’s roofline provided the raccoon family with access to the attic.
Simply removing the raccoons wouldn’t provide a long-term solution. Once the animals were gone, the opening needed to be properly sealed while accommodating the existing ridges and contours of the lanai roof.
The repair also needed to protect the area from water intrusion without creating an obvious patch along the home’s exterior.
Wildlife Works first addressed the raccoon activity and confirmed that the animals had been successfully evicted from the attic before sealing the entry point.
Technician Zack then carefully measured the length and height of the opening, including the contours created by the ridges of the lanai roof.
Custom metal pieces were precisely cut to fit the opening between the home’s original soffit and the lanai roofline. The pieces were secured using color-matched screws so the finished exclusion blended naturally with the existing exterior.
Industrial-grade silicone was then applied along the bottom of the metal, creating an additional seal designed to help prevent future wildlife entry while also providing a waterproof barrier beneath the soffit and behind the exclusion material.
The raccoon family was successfully removed from the attic, and the entry point beneath the soffit was completely sealed.
The finished exclusion closely follows the existing roofline and drip edge, making the repair difficult to distinguish from the home’s original construction.
Most importantly, the homeowner now has a properly sealed former entry point designed to help prevent raccoons and other wildlife from using the same opening to access the attic in the future.
